Succeeding in your first semester in Russia
Students who fall behind almost never do so for lack of ability: they fall behind because they did not flag a difficulty in time, or because they stayed among French speakers. The first semester sets habits that last the whole programme.
What surprises most
- The oral exam, the dominant format in Russia: you draw a topic and present it to the examiner

The four habits that make the difference
- Do not stay among French speakers: those who progress most live in Russian outside class from the first weeks
- Work on specialty vocabulary in parallel, without waiting for the second semester
- Use the mock exams offered by the faculty: they reproduce the real format
- Flag any difficulty to your tutor immediately — a slip caught in November can be made up, in May far less so
Handling distance
Homesickness is real, especially during the first winter. Two things help concretely: regular but structured contact with family, and quick integration into the local Tunisian student community, present in every partner city.
Retreating entirely into the Tunisian community, however, is the surest way never to progress in Russian. Balance matters.
