A university created for international students
RUDN was created on 5 February 1960 with an explicit mission: to train specialists from Asia, Africa and Latin America. It is the only university in the network for which hosting international students is not a side activity but the reason it exists.
Its current official name is "Peoples' Friendship University of Russia named after Patrice Lumumba". As early as 1961 its first major faculties covered engineering, medicine, and economics and law — the three families of programmes that most interest Maghrebi school-leavers today.
Hosting international students
The preparatory faculty has existed since 1960, that is since the very founding of the university. It provides language and subject preparation for foreign students before they enter the degree course.
The university also states more than nine thousand places in halls on its official accommodation page. Among the institutions in the network, it is the one whose housing capacity is documented most clearly.
Studying in Moscow
RUDN is based in Moscow. The capital is the most expensive of the eight cities in the network, but also the one where international student communities are largest — a context that naturally extends the vocation of the university.
What to verify with the institution
Even at an institution designed for international students, two points remain to be confirmed for your specific application.
- The language of instruction of the programme you are targeting: international admissions mention tests in Russian and English, which says nothing about the language of the full course
- The effective allocation of a place in halls: nine thousand places does not mean an automatic place for every applicant
Programmes open to international students
The status of each of the five programmes we document. "To be verified" means no institutional source allowed us to settle the question: it is neither a yes nor a no, and it is confirmed with the institution for the academic year concerned.
| General medicine | Offered |
|---|---|
| Engineering and technology | Offered |
| Pharmacy | Offered |
| Dentistry | Offered |
| Economics and management | Offered |
Languages of instruction
Language depends on the programme, not on the university. Some courses may be offered in English while others are taught in Russian: the language of instruction must be verified for the chosen programme before applying.
Preparatory year of Russian
The institution has a preparatory structure for international students. It allows you to prepare for study in Russia, particularly in the Russian language and, depending on the case, in the subjects needed for your future course. Duration, content and fees are to be confirmed with the university.
University halls of residence
The university states more than nine thousand places on its official accommodation page.
University halls are available, subject to allocation conditions and available places. The existence of a housing stock does not guarantee that a place will be allocated to every international student.
Can this university suit a Tunisian, Moroccan or Algerian student?
Admission requirements vary by programme and by the nationality of the applicant. A Tunisian, Moroccan or Algerian student must check the official requirements applying to their own file before starting the procedure. Here are the points to check, in this order.
- Your secondary school leaving certificate and its recognition by the institution you are targeting
- Whether the programme you want is open to international students for the year concerned
- The language of instruction of the full course, and the level required
- Whether a preparatory year of Russian is needed
- Any admission tests or interviews
- The exact list of documents to be translated and legalised
- The lead times for the invitation letter and the student visa
- Accommodation arrangements and the total annual budget
