Two centuries of science in Kazan

Founded in 1804 as Kazan Imperial University, it is one of the oldest universities in Russia. Its scientific history is not institutional legend: this is where Nikolai Lobachevsky developed non-Euclidean geometry, which overturned nineteenth-century mathematics.

It is also in Kazan that the chemist Karl Claus discovered ruthenium in 1844. Few universities can attach two contributions of that reach to their own walls.

Hosting international students

The university has a preparatory faculty for international students, the usual entry route before joining a degree course for those who do not yet master Russian.

It explicitly provides for housing international students in its halls, subject to availability. That wording deserves to be read as it stands: a place is not automatic.

Studying in Kazan

By the account of the students concerned, Kazan is the city in the network where cultural adaptation is gentlest for a Maghrebi student: a large, long-established Muslim population, halal food everywhere, prayer spaces you do not have to search for. All at a cost of living markedly below Moscow. The page devoted to the city develops these points.

What to verify with the institution

The university has an international catalogue and English-taught programmes, but language must be checked programme by programme.

  • The language of instruction of the programme you are targeting, verified at programme level rather than university level
  • Whether that programme is open to international students for the current year
  • The effective availability of a place in halls

Programmes open to international students

The status of each of the five programmes we document. "To be verified" means no institutional source allowed us to settle the question: it is neither a yes nor a no, and it is confirmed with the institution for the academic year concerned.

Languages of instruction

RussianYesEnglishYes

Language depends on the programme, not on the university. Some courses may be offered in English while others are taught in Russian: the language of instruction must be verified for the chosen programme before applying.

Preparatory year of Russian

Preparatory facultyYes

The institution has a preparatory structure for international students. It allows you to prepare for study in Russia, particularly in the Russian language and, depending on the case, in the subjects needed for your future course. Duration, content and fees are to be confirmed with the university.

University halls of residence

Halls of residenceYes

University halls are available, subject to allocation conditions and available places. The existence of a housing stock does not guarantee that a place will be allocated to every international student.

Can this university suit a Tunisian, Moroccan or Algerian student?

Admission requirements vary by programme and by the nationality of the applicant. A Tunisian, Moroccan or Algerian student must check the official requirements applying to their own file before starting the procedure. Here are the points to check, in this order.

  1. Your secondary school leaving certificate and its recognition by the institution you are targeting
  2. Whether the programme you want is open to international students for the year concerned
  3. The language of instruction of the full course, and the level required
  4. Whether a preparatory year of Russian is needed
  5. Any admission tests or interviews
  6. The exact list of documents to be translated and legalised
  7. The lead times for the invitation letter and the student visa
  8. Accommodation arrangements and the total annual budget

Official sources
