A teaching tradition, and a recent medical institute

The university bears the name of Ivan Bunin, the writer who spent part of his youth in Yelets. Its institutional history goes back to a pedagogical institute created in the town in the late 1930s; we do not publish a precise founding date, for lack of a direct institutional source confirming it.

The most notable fact for a health applicant is recent: the medical institute of the university was organised in 2021. It offers general medicine, paediatrics and pharmacy at specialist level. It is a young structure, which is information in itself — to be weighed according to whether you value the age of a course or the closeness of its supervision.

Hosting international students

The university has a preparatory department for foreign citizens. The application window runs through the spring, for training that starts in the autumn and continues until the end of the following summer: a calendar to anticipate several months ahead.

University halls exist; the precise conditions applying to international students remain to be confirmed with the institution.

Studying in Yelets

Yelets is, along with Oryol, the cheapest of the eight cities in the network. It is a small historic town where everything is close, a quiet setting conducive to concentration — particularly during the preparatory language year. The page devoted to the town details its advantages as well as its limits.

What to verify with the institution

Several points could not be confirmed by an institutional source and must be asked about directly.

  • Whether dentistry, engineering and economics are open to international students
  • Whether any English-taught tracks exist: we found evidence only of teaching in Russian
  • The accommodation conditions applying to international students
  • The exact founding date of the university, if that matters for your equivalence procedures

Programmes open to international students

The status of each of the five programmes we document. "To be verified" means no institutional source allowed us to settle the question: it is neither a yes nor a no, and it is confirmed with the institution for the academic year concerned.

Languages of instruction

RussianYesEnglishTo be verified

Language depends on the programme, not on the university. Some courses may be offered in English while others are taught in Russian: the language of instruction must be verified for the chosen programme before applying.

Preparatory year of Russian

Preparatory facultyYes

The institution has a preparatory structure for international students. It allows you to prepare for study in Russia, particularly in the Russian language and, depending on the case, in the subjects needed for your future course. Duration, content and fees are to be confirmed with the university.

University halls of residence

Halls of residenceYes

University halls are available, subject to allocation conditions and available places. The existence of a housing stock does not guarantee that a place will be allocated to every international student.

Can this university suit a Tunisian, Moroccan or Algerian student?

Admission requirements vary by programme and by the nationality of the applicant. A Tunisian, Moroccan or Algerian student must check the official requirements applying to their own file before starting the procedure. Here are the points to check, in this order.

  1. Your secondary school leaving certificate and its recognition by the institution you are targeting
  2. Whether the programme you want is open to international students for the year concerned
  3. The language of instruction of the full course, and the level required
  4. Whether a preparatory year of Russian is needed
  5. Any admission tests or interviews
  6. The exact list of documents to be translated and legalised
  7. The lead times for the invitation letter and the student visa
  8. Accommodation arrangements and the total annual budget

Official sources
